Thought of the Day and Book Recommendations

I’ve been having a lot of thoughts lately about my life and my ambitions and my abilities and eventually I’ll probably blog about my conclusions but for now it’s still too swirly in my head to put into coherent thoughts.

So instead, I’ll leave this quote from Rye Barcott’s “It Happened on the Way to War,” which I strongly recommend, especially if you enjoyed Nate Fick’s “One Bullet Away” and/or Eric Greitens’ “The Heart and the Fist.” And if you haven’t read any of them, then I suggest you check them all out. If someone asked me to list off the top 5 books that impacted my life, those 3 would probably all make it on there. But if you’re only going to pick one — this is a hard choice, but Barcott’s book is probably my favorite (which may have something to do with the summer I spent in Kenya).

But I’m getting off topic now.

The quote: “It’s good to help when you can.”

Thoughts on the quote? What books would you put on a list of most influential in your life? Or do you have a favorite quote that really just makes you think?

Adoptaplatoon

I’ve worked with Adoptaplatoon for just over a year now. They match up deployed military troops with people at home for pen pals and care packages and general support. It’s a good organization, and it’s not hard to do. I mean really, who doesn’t have time to write a letter a week and send a care package every so often? If you can’t do an ongoing commitment right now, they have lots of one time opportunities. The other day I got this email from them:

SERVICE MEMBERS NEED SUPPORT! The holidays are right around the corner. We have been receiving so many requests from newly deployed Service Members asking for support and we want them to know that the American people are behind them and let them know they are not forgotten. Many are single, young, and away from their families for the first time, in a war-torn area.

Please ask your family, friends, and co-workers to sign-up to support a Service Member by going to our website, www.adoptaplatoon.org, and filling out the application at the top of the website. Holidays are right around the corner so please promote supporting our Troops now so we can make sure our Troops receive holiday support. THANK YOU!

Consider yourselves asked – and if you know someone else who would be interested, feel free to pass along the message.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I’ll try to answer :)
